After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test Cricket and T20 cricket, Shubman Gill has been announced as the Test Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. The decision is taken as part of the plan to strengthen India’s middle order. This also helps to provide more stability in tough situations. This move was made to fill the spot of Virat Kohli in the series. He is just 25 years old, at this age people did not expect him to be the new face of the Indian Cricket team on the international level. Captaincy in test matches is one of the crucial role someone can play for the team.
Who Is the New Captain of the Test Team, Shubman Gill?
Shubman Gill is an Indian cricketer, played in both national and international matches. He was born on September 8th 1999, in Punjab. Recently, he was announced as captain of the team for the Test cricket format. He is a right-hand batsman and rarely bowls as a right-arm off-break.
Why Bat No.4 For Shubman Gill?
As we are all aware that Shubman Gill is one of the prominent and budding players of the Indian Cricket team so far. And, the No.4 spot is very crucial in test cricket. It has to be assigned to someone capable of it. And also, it is a spot where Virat Kohli played in test matches as a batsman. The No.4 spot is expected to carry the innings forward. Especially if the team loses early wickets in any match. In the past, there were legends like Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar who had played at this crucial spot.
Shubman Gill’s calm and steady approach towards the games makes him a good choice for this important position. His ability to adjust to different conditions and his mental strength are expected to help him succeed at No. 4.
Official Confirmation Of This Spot
Vice Captain of the test team, Rishabh Pant, has confirmed in the media that the No.4 position is assigned to Shubman Gill. He will be batting in this spot for the team. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant will bat on the spot of No.5 for this test series. And its first match is on 20th June 2025, India will play against England.
Addressing this new position, Shubman Gill has said, “After Virat bhai announced his retirement, (coach Gambhir) and I discussed it, and we both agreed that I would bat at number four, which is what I wanted as well,” said Shubman Gill.
And on the other hand, Rishabh Pant has said that “I believe Shubman will bat at number four while I will remain at number five for now,”
Future Outlook Of Shubman Gill For the Team
As we all know that there are many Indian Cricket team players who are seniors who have announced their retirement from the team. So, now the Indian National Team requires new talent, or we can say that new faces for the team. The team is in a rebuilding phase, and much depends on Gill’s ability to inspire and guide the younger players. With this position, he steps into the dual challenge of leading a new-look team and anchoring the batting order at No. 4 following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
